When Daniel took blood from Christine’s wrist after drugging her, that was a very important moment that led to things going downhill very quickly. At that point, his vampire side became THAT much more in control.

So if you thought it seemed like Daniel became cruel very suddenly after seeming to care about her at the beginning, that’s why. The real Daniel was hanging onto the driving wheel by his pinky after that night. Then after the second time, he basically lost his grip entirely.
