Chapter One
The sun was just setting as darkness began to creep in through the window. A precarious young vampire, Jill Cross, was awakening. As she sat up in bed, she thought of her meeting with Maximilian Orlock, the self-proclaimed vampiric monarch. She shuddered. Not long after the encounter, Jill began to get over the resentment she felt towards her sire, Jack Price. Jill started to feel like a part of something other than a part of a group of humans trying to escape from death. To her, it was the closest thing to family she would ever know.
Jill got up and went to take a bath and get dressed. “Eternal youth and life and the only price is having to murder and no reflection.” she said sarcastically as she passed the mirror. “Dare I ask what they are up to tonight? Another lovely stroll to some other self-obsessing psycho perhaps?” She of course, was referring to Jack and the others: Topaz Kainrock, Vallov, and the ever sullen Maila Nurmi. Maila, or Mai as she was called, still thought that Raff her supposed one-and-only had been executed. Therefore, she absolutely hated Jill because she believed Raff wouldn’t have died if Jill had. Jill wanted nothing more than to befriend Mai, and Mai wanted nothing more than to behead Jill.
Jack was sitting on the couch waiting for Jill to come down. Jack understood Jill’s reactions and emotions about her new gift better than most. He knew that she would begin to accept it after a while, or at least he hoped she would. “Is she still asleep?” Topaz had just come back from his little evening walk, “Do you think she’s alright? I mean, after all, she did meet him.” he said as he sat down in a chair, Mai came out of her room and sat in a chair beside him. “I’m sure Jill’s fine. She’s not exactly the type to crawl in a corner and pray for death after that.” Jack said reassuringly, “Still, she is a sound sleeper, maybe someone should check on...” he paused as he realized a smile forming on his face, and the strange look of disgust on Mai’s. “Is that just your interpretation of spying on innocent women, or do you just always have that much concern for others?” Jack turned to see Jill standing there in denim jeans and an oversized t-shirt with a skeptical look. “Uh, heh, g-good evening Jill,” turning back to Topaz, “see, I told you she was fine.” Topaz rolled his eyes as he waved and Jill sat down beside Jack on the couch. Mai made it obvious she didn’t care for Jill, so every night she would leave until just before the sun would rise, or unless Jack insisted against it. Tonight was no different as she got up and crossed the room towards the front door. She paused a minute and without turning, “Good evening, Jill.” she said venomously as she proceeded to leave. Jill sat there with mixed feelings, not knowing whether to feel spite towards Mai or sadness for herself. “Does she really hate me that much? I never really did anything!” Jack, noticing Jill’s expressions of confusion and anger as she spoke, tried to comfort her by saying, “Mai doesn’t know how to react, really. She thinks Riff-Raff is dead, and that he actually cared about her. But if we try to tell her otherwise, she might try to free him, or kill herself or one of us. And Raff just isn’t worth losing anyone over.” Topaz stood up and went to the door. “Even so, Jack, we can’t hide the truth forever, she’ll eventually find out and that might prove to be more of a problem. I’ll go look for her. At the very least, Mai needs to know that Raff used her.” As Topaz was about to close the door behind him Jack said softly, “Don’t tell her everything, just that Jill is not at fault. Raff crossed the line and it was time he paid for it.” “Right.” And with that he left, leaving a bit of uneasiness and silence between Jack and Jill. Jack was first to break the vexatious silence. “So, are you hungry?” “Uh, sure. Whatever.”
The rest of the night came and went with a droll manner of awkward silence as everyone except Maila sat around and got up to leave, just to return and sit once more. Even the drone, Vallov, created to protect Jack was unusually scarce. Jill decided she would go for a walk, but as soon as she walked a few steps outside Jack stepped outside and stood beside her. “The sun will rise in half an hour.” “I know.” replied Jill as she started off on her walk. Jack knowing full well that Jill would probably get lost and more than likely die began to follow her, at a distance of course. “I hate trees.” grumbled Jill as she fought with stray branches hanging about. Jack couldn’t help but chuckle a little at the sight. “She’s almost too much like her..” he thought to himself remembering his deceased wife, Emily, “I wonder how ‘brave’ little Jill actually is..” he continued to ponder, a sly look falling upon his smiling face. Jill, oblivious to the scheming Jack not far from her, continued to fight limbs and complain as Jack’s plans began to reveal themselves inside his twisted mind. “She thinks she can handle herself, eh? Let’s just see” he whispered as he melted into the shadows. “Grargh! These stupid bushes! Whew. I wonder what time it is.” “You still have 20 minutes until dawn..” as gruff sound replied. Startled, Jill looked around and thought to herself, “Oh God, what was that?! Maybe... Maybe I’m just hearing things. W-well I’m not scared of what or whoever it is!” She began walking again until she heard a rustle in a nearby bush. “Who-who’s there?!” Jack, trying to keep from laughing, again used the gruff tone and said, “Wanna know? Then you’ll have to find out!” “Wha? Alright! Who is there? I-I’m not scared of you!” “Oh really? Then why are you trembling so much?” asked Jack slyly as he stood up. “J-Jack?! How dare you... I-I can’t believe... I.. I wasn’t trembling!” retorted an irritated Jill. “Sure, it was just the cold breeze making you shiver, wasn’t it?” “Uh, yes! It was the..” she paused as Jack walked over to her with a serious look on his face, “What’s... wrong?” she asked raising an eyebrow. He reached out and with his index finger poked her nose. “You... were scared!” Jill, looking into Jack‘s eyes, knew a shrewd smile suddenly appeared on her face. “Remove your finger, or you’ll be the one shaking in fear.” Not wanting to further the aggravation she felt, Jack quickly put down his hand and gave a little bow. “I do believe it is time we start back home.”
Chapter Two The room was cold and dark, save for the moonlight
beginning to shine through a large window. Jack rolled over in his bed
as the moonlight shone in his eyes. He thought of the previous night
and how angry Jill had looked when they returned, and of his dream. A
rather bland one, but he remembered it nonetheless. It more or less was
a sort of flashback of when he was younger; Jack asked himself why he
had dreamt that of all things. He decided to forget it as he patted
himself dry after his bath and got dressed. “I wonder if
Jill’s awake yet.” Jack thought as he passed her door.
“Hmm, I really should apologize to her, and she does need to get
up” Jack said quietly while he opened the door. As if saying it
aloud could justify his actions, he went in after checking to see if
anyone was watching. Jill lay there sound asleep, in shorts and a tank
top, with the blanket partially draped on the floor. Jack silently
walked over to the bed and watched her sleep. “Hmmm...” a
smile creeping on his face as he thought. He gently reached down and
poked Jill’s nose once more. Jill groaned and moved a little in
response. “You... need to get up,” he whispered quietly,
“Won’t get up? Oookay. Heh heh.” Jack softly crawled
in bed next to Jill and put her arm over his shoulder. Facing her, he
blew gently on her nose. Jill blinked awake, and sleepily looked at
Jack’s smiling face, then closed her eyes. After what seemed an
eternity to Jack, Jill finally realized he was there and jerked
upright, kicking him off the bed in the process. “JACK! I hate
you! Get out, get out!” she screamed as Jack stood up, being
pelted by flying pillows. Topaz and Vallov burst through the door.
“What’s wrong?!” Topaz shouted ducking to avoid a
pillow. “I guess she didn’t like my little wake up
call.” replied Jack, still smiling and ducking. “Get
OUT!” Jill yelled when she finally ran out of pillows to throw.
“I just wanted t--fwhumph” Jack muffled as she threw the
blanket at him. Topaz grabbed Jack and dragged him to the door.
“We were just leaving! Oh, uh good evening, by the way.” he
said while pushing Jack out as Vallov opened the door. Jill, still red
in the face, sat there thinking to herself, “The nerve of him!
How dare he?!” Meanwhile, back down stairs, Jack was getting
‘lectured’ by Topaz. “How could you?!” Topaz
stood in front of Jack, demanding to know. “Well, I-” Jack
started, “And without me!” Topaz interrupted. “Uh,
I’m.. sorry?” Jack looked at Topaz strangely as he sat down
across from Jack. Topaz had always wanted to wake up one of the girls,
or that’s what he said anyway. He didn’t exactly have an
untainted virgin mind. “Well, at any rate, she’s
pissed.” “She’ll get over it,” Jack said
nonchalantly. “She can’t stay mad at me forever.”
Jill had just walked in and stood behind the couch Jack was always
lounging on. “Oh, can’t I? Do I need permission to stay mad
and hold grudges?” she said with a certain air of defiance.
“Now, now. No need for animosity, Jill. Jack, didn‘t you
want to say something to her?” Topaz’s attempt at peace had
earned him a couple of death-glares. “I refuse to listen to
whatever it is he has to say.” “I have nothing to say to
her.” The two leered at each other with such ferocity that they,
eventually, both gave up. Jill sat down in the chair Mai had sat in the
night before, next to Topaz. Topaz groaned, it was obviously going to
be a long night. After the fifth round of Jack and Jill’s little
‘staring contest’, Topaz got up and went to his room. They
both watched him leave, then continued staring daggers at each other.
“I’m not apologizing until you admit you acted
childish.” Jack said snidely. “I acted childish?! You are
the one at fault, not me, dork.” Jack seemed to take particular
offense to Jill’s remark, recalling how Emily used to call him a
dork. “What’s wrong with you?” Jill asked, trying not
to sound too concerned. “Nothing, I’m sorry.” he
muttered as he went outside. The night was cold and the fog seemed to
dance and encircle the moon from time to time. Jack stood propping
himself against the door, lost in thought. Jill cautiously stepped
beside him, turning her head slightly to look and his face.
“Listen, I forgive you, for now, but never do that again.”
she said staring out into the darkness. Jack looked down at her. He
sighed as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and rested his chin
on her head. “It’s nothing, just a painful memory.”
He said finally, Jill still blushing. “Oh, um, sorry. And uh,
could you let go of me?” she said looking away so Jack
couldn’t see her red face. Jack, realizing his actions, quickly
let go of Jill. “Yeah, uh, it’s kind of cold, we should go
back in.” Jack said while rubbing the back of his head, trying to
act casually. Back in his room, Jack had decided to lay down for a nap, but he
couldn’t seem to close his eyes other than to think. Jill, on the
other hand, sat on her bed recalling how Jack reacted and of how he had
embraced her. She blushed at the mere recollection of it. She felt a
little awkward and nauseous, probably from hunger. She hadn’t
drunken much blood the night before. The dizziness that followed was
almost to much to bear as she got up to go to Jack’s room for
advise. She got about half way there before collapsing on the floor.
Jack, hearing a thud outside his door, went to check it out.
“Who...” he stopped, seeing Jill sprawled out on the floor.
“Good grief! I told her to drink more.” complained Jack as
he went to retrieve the fallen Jill. Picking her up and taking her to
his room, he laid her on the bed and left to get blood. In the kitchen,
Topaz was trying to convince Mai to forget about Raff, seemingly to
avail. “But Mai, you and I both know you were happier here before
he showed up.” Topaz said hoping she would agree. “Why
should you care about how I feel or felt!” Mai yelled in
response. Jack had just walked in to catch the conversation.
“Mai, please don’t yell, Topaz, do we have any blood left
in the refrigerator?” he said calmly. Vallov came in to see what
the yelling was about. “I think we do, why? Didn’t you get
enough?” Topaz replied. Mai looked on smugly. “Yeah, but
Jill didn’t. She collapsed in the hallway.” Jack said as he
walked over to the refrigerator. The mention of Jill upset Mai enough
to make her leave the room. Pulling out a container, he poured some in
a glass. Replacing the container, he started towards the door,
“Vallov,” “Yes?” the drone asked. “Watch
Mai, I have a feeling she might try to exact pointless revenge on
Jill.” “Of course.” and with that said, Jack and
Vallov left the kitchen to go their own places, leaving Topaz by
himself. “Good lord, what a night.” He thought to himself. Jill was just barely able to remain conscious once she came to.
Wearily looking around, she noticed the room she was in was not hers.
She managed to gather enough strength to sit up long enough for Jack to
walk in and smile. “Good you‘re up, I was starting think I
would have to perform mouth-to-mouth on you.” “Why am I in
your room? And what--” Jill couldn’t finish as she fell
back on the bed. Jack strolled over to her in a most obnoxious manner.
“You were saying?” he asked as he sat on the bed.
“Euh, that’s not.. I already had some last night!”
she protested. “Yeah, but not enough, dear Jill. The dizziness
and sea-sick feeling will go away only when you drink some more. You
don’t want to have a hunger driven slaughter fest, do you?”
Taking the glass, Jill drank the blood reluctantly. “I still
don’t know why I’m in your room.. Care to explain?”
Jill asked
seriously. Jack, looking at Jill’s expression and noting the
seriousness of her voice, replied simply, “Well, you did pass out
closer to my room, and it would’ve been a long journey to
your room from where you were. Besides, you’re heavier than you
look.” Embarrassed and angry, Jill backhanded him across the
face. “Why you! I never asked for you to carry me!” she
said, flustered. He realized he over did it with that last remark and
politely asked her, “I am terribly sorry, but could you possibly
leave.. At once?” Not knowing if he meant just his room or his
house, she fled quickly to the hall and then promptly proceeded to her
room.
